He was hoping for a top three overall, but getting the combativity prize is a great way to end the Tour de France for Dan Martin. And he pinned on the red numbers for today's final stage.
Dan Martin's special numbers at Tour de France
Ireland's Dan Martin has said it was "quite special" for him to pin on the red combativity numbers for the final stage of the Tour de France.
Unusually, he did not win the award on any stage of the race. But when it came to a public and jury vote, Martin was elected the most aggressive of the race overall.
And so for today's final stage he gets to pin on the red numbers. They are worn each day by the rider who won the combativity award the previous day.
But because yesterday's stage was a TT and because Dan Martin is the winner of the award for the entire race, he got to wear them into Paris today.
He was also set to get a presentation on the podium on the Champs-Élysées this evening when the race was all over.
And in a nice touch at the stage start this afternoon in Houilles he was called to the front of the peloton with the other top men.
In that front row for the TV start alongside Dan Martin were yellow jersey Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) and points classification leader Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe).
Also among the select few was young rider classification leader Pierre Latour (AG2R La Mondiale) and king of the mountains Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step).
Sylvain Chavanel (Direct Energie) was also called up to the front. The 39-year-old is riding his last Tour. The French legend has ridden the Tour 18 times and retires at the end of the season.
