Ireland’s Dan Martin has not been included in QuickStep team for Vuelta a España. The three week rest he needed has expired but he is not in the Vuelta team. No mention at all has been made of him in the statement announcing the line-up for the Spanish Grand Tour.

Dan Martin has not been named on QuickStep’s team for the Vuelta a España. The Irish rider, who is believed to be leaving the team, suffered two fractured vertebrae during the Tour de France.

The problem was not diagnosed until after the race. And Dan Martin has recently said he need to rest so he could recover.

Martin suffered those injuries during his crash on stage 9 of the race.

And though the pain while on his bike would ease, he had difficulty walking after stages.

However, in announcing his diagnosis the team said he would need three weeks rest. And because that period has now expired there was some hope he could be back for the Vuelta.

It was not to be, however, and Dan Martin’s name was absent from QuickStep’s line-up announced this morning.

There was not mention of the Irish rider in the statement revealing the Vuelta selection.

Instead the team is made up of David De La Cruz, Bob Jungels, Julian Alaphilippe, Eros Capecchi, Tim Declercq, Yves Lampaert, neo-pro Enric Mas, Niki Terpstra and Matteo Trentin.

"The Vuelta will be again a tough race, with many brutal climb and steep gradients, some kicking out at 25 per cent,” said sport director Geert Van Bondt.

“It will be gruelling even for the best climbers. And the extreme temperatures will make everything even more difficult and test the riders throughout these three weeks.”
