Dan Martin into top 3 in WorldTour rankings
Dan Martin has moved into the top 3 in the WorldTour rankings and five Irish riders have now scored ranking points.
Irish rider Martin enjoyed a fantastic Tour de France with 6th overall.
But he also took eight top 10 placings on stages. And two of those – a 2nd and 3rd – carried WorldTour ranking points.
Martin has 2,040 points, 400 of which were scored for his general classification placing in the Tour.
He also netted 315 points for each of his 3rd placings overall in Paris Nice and Critérium du Dauphiné.
Meanwhile, his 2nd in Liège-Bastogne-Liège was worth 400 points. And 2nd in La Flèche Wallonne won him 320 points.
His next highest points tally was for 6th overall back in March at Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. That performance secured for him 140 points.
Dan Martin is almost unique in his consistency across both one-day races and stage races.
There are no top ranked riders, with the exception of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), to match him in that regard.
Of the other Irish riders to score in the WorldTour rankings, Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) is next after Martin.
He is 94th and scored the majority of his points at the Giro d’Italia.
He scored four top three stage placings and 3rd in the points classification, for a combined 120 points. His stage win in Paris-Nice brought him 60 points.
Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) is 153rd and has 93 points.
He took 30 for 18th overall at Paris-Nice and 25 points for 33rd overall at the Tour de France. His 4th place on stage 8 of the Tour was worth 15 points.
Philip Deignan (Team Sky) is 283rd; his 37th overall at the Giro worth 20 points. And being part of the Team Sky TTT line-up on stage 2 of Volta Ciclista a Catalunya was worth 3 points.
Ryan Mullen (Cannondale-Drapac) is 5th of the five Irishmen in the WorldTour rankings with 10 points. They were earned for his 50th place in Paris-Roubaix.
The UCI WorldTour rankings also grade trade teams, but not nations.
QuickStep Floors is top team with 10,100 points. It is followed by BMC Racing on 8,198 and Team Sky on 8,011 points.
The leader of the WorldTour rankings Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) has scored poorly in stage races. Almost all of his points come from one-day races.
He has 2,628 points; his wins in Paris-Roubaix and Gent Wevelgem worth 500 points each.
He scored 400 points for 2nd in the Tour of Flanders and for winning E3 Harelbeke.
And for winning Omloop Het Nieuwsblad he took 300 points. His 2nd in Strade Bianche was worth 250 points.
The only other rider like Dan Martin in the top 20 to score significantly across one-day events and stage races is Alejandro Valverde.
The Movistar man is in 2nd place in the WorldTour rankings on 2,105 points. He would very likely be leading had he gotten to collect points through the Tour de France.
His overall victories in Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco and Vuelta Ciclista a Catalunya were worth 400 points each.
And his wins in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and La Flèche Wallonne were worth 500 and 400 points respectively.
After Van Avermaet, Valverde and Martin; Richie Porte (BMC Racing) is 4th on 1,882. He is followed by Giro winner Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) on 1,851.
In 6th and 7th are two Team Sky men Chris Froome and Michal Kwiatkowski; 1,824 and 1,771 points respectively.
WorldTour Rankings Vs World Rankings
UCI now has two ranking systems; the UCI WorldTour rankings and the UCI World rankings.
The UCI WorldTour rankings include points scored by all riders in WorldTour races this year. And ranking points are awarded right down the placings in these events.
The UCI World Rankings seek to offer a wider grading of riders. They take into account points scored by all riders in any UCI race in the previous 52 weeks.
In the WorldTour Rankings every rider starts the calendar year with zero points. They then go on to score points as they ride WorldTour races.
The UCI World Ranking – for individuals and nations – takes into account results achieved at all events on the UCI International Road Calendar.
These include UCI WorldTour, UCI Continental Circuits, UCI World Championships, National and Continental Championships, Olympic Games and Continental Games.
And points are for performances during the 52 previous weeks; a "rolling" system.
