The plan had been to lead the Tour de France team alone but Dan Martin now believes he and Fabio Aru would work very well together in the same line-up at the French Grand Tour.

Dan Martin asked about Fabio Aru at Tour de France

Having signed with UAE Team Emirates for more support at the Tour de France, Dan Martin has spoken of possibly sharing team leadership in the race.

Fabio Aru is of course the other major Grand Tour contender in the squad.

It was understood Martin would lead the team at the Tour and Aru would take on that role at the Giro.

However, with the team yet to make it clear which race Aru will ride, the shape of the team for the Tour is not yet clear.

Indeed, with the start of the Giro as soon as May 4th, Fabio Aru us yet to race this year.

His Irish team mate has had his season debut in recent days at the Volta ao Algarve.

He was 4th on the summit finish stage 2 before a poor TT the following day. He said the big effort 24 hours earlier had taken a lot out of him.

At the time of writing, Martin was looking for another shot at stage victory on Sunday’s final day of the race.

And speaking to cyclingnews in Portugal, Martin believes if both he and Aru went to the Tour de France it could work well.

“Honestly, I think we’d work really well together at the Tour,” he said. “I think we’d play well off each other.

“Also, with that first week, I think it would be good to have two options. We’ll see what his plans are, and whatever they are we’ll make the best of it.”

Dan Martin suggested Fabio Aru could ride both the Giro and Tour.

“It would be nice for the team to have someone in the Giro; in terms of having the team support someone.

“But to have him at the Tour would be great to play off each other.”
