Mullingar powerhouse Damien Shaw (Lakeside) has taken victory this evening, Tuesday, in the latest round of the Bike Worx Race Series at Mondello in Co Kildare.
On a horrendous night for racing, Shaw was the only rider from the scratch group to get up to the limit men in the handicapped event; working his way through all of those ahead of him and blasting in towards the finish with only Graham Thomas able to hold his wheel.
In the end even Thomas could not hold the flying Mullingar man all the way to the line, losing contact with him going onto the last lap and then having to work hard to hold off the chasers behind to hang on for second.
However, hang on he did; taking that second spot behind Shaw, with Darragh Mortimer (Epic MTB) in third place. Mortimer came home just ahead of a small group, with the gallop from that being won by Ciaran O’Conluain (UCD CC).
With 47 riders taking to the line on a very tough night for racing, the event was shortened and the handicaps reduced; with a gap of three minutes from limit to scratch. That did not stop some of those who signed on simply changing their minds about racing and heading for home before the flag dropped, such were the conditions.
The next round of the Bike Worx series is Tuesday 7th August with racing starting at 7:30pm sharp.
