Having been one of the top riders on the domestic scene last year, Daire Feeley has since moved to Monaco to give full-time international racing a go.

He returned for the An Post Rás hoping for big things. And while time loss on one of the Donegal stages cost him dearly he still won the county rider classification overall.

“I‘m delighted to take a jersey of the An Post Rás, first of all,” he said at the finish in Skerries yesterday.

“Originally I was hoping for a stage win and a top ten result overall. But on the stage to Dungloe I missed the split and that is when I lost a lot of time.

“I had the jersey to fall back on. Just to ride into Skerries in the blue jersey felt class. I am delighted with it.”

He said he would now go back to Europe on the hint for big results.

“I have a couple of UCI races when I head back to Monaco. Hopefully I can get a result out of them and progress on for next year,” he said.

He was also looking to do well at the National Road Championships in Wexford in June.  And he should also have further Irish team action to look forward to.

In the meantime, he said his Rás ride will give him confidence going forward. And but for some bad luck in his Team iTap squad during the An Post Rás he felt his finishing position would have been higher.

“My team were hit with a bit of bad luck during the week so they weren’t really able to help me out,” he said.

“But I had great support crew in the background. If my team were there, I do think I would have been able to get a higher result in the general classification.

“I was able to compete with the best on the climbs and everything, so for the head it is great. It is great.”
