Cyclists urged to cancel rides on Sunday, Monday over forecast storms

Cyclists in the nine counties covered by the orange warning and urged to cancel or delay their rides. And in the rest of the country, where a yellow warning applies, very strong gusts are also expected

Cyclists planning rides in nine counties covered by a Met Eireann orange storm warning are being urged to cancel or delay their outings.

A ‘Status Orange’ wind warning has been issued for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick from tomorrow afternoon, Sunday.

The
warning for all nine counties is due to Storm Atiyah and is valid from 1pm
tomorrow until Monday at 6am.

“Storm
Atiyah will track between Iceland and Ireland on Sunday, generating very strong
winds across the country,” Met Eireann has said.

“Southwesterly
winds, later veering northwesterly, will reach mean speeds between 65 and 80 km
per hour with gusts between 110 and 130km per hour; possibly higher in exposed
coastal areas.”

It
added that due to a combination of high seas and storm surge there was also a possibility
of coastal flooding; something cyclists should also be aware of.

The
advice to all cyclists in the nine counties covered by the orange warning is to
consider delaying or cancelling planned rides.

If
cyclists are out they are warned that gusts of winds will be so high they may be
blown into vehicles.

A yellow storm warning is also in place relating to the high winds predicted due to Storm Atiyah in Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford.

That
means winds will be between 50and 65km per hour with a possibility of gusts
between 90-110km per hour.

That yellow warning is valid from 7pm this evening, Saturday, until 1pm tomorrow.
