Hundreds of cyclists turned out yesterday in Galway to demonstrate their support for the mooted Salthill Prom Cycleway on the eve of a key council meeting to decide the future of the project.

Yesterday's event was organised by Galway Cycling Campaign, which has been leading the charge in favour of what would be a fantastic piece of cycling infrastructure.

Galway City Council was due to meet today to make decisions about the proposed cycleway. That meeting is being held against the backdrop of a report having been compiled about the facility for the council, which contains many objections to the project.

However, the cycling community and many residents in Galway are passionate about having a cycleway on Salthill Prom, which would transform the area into a cycling-friendly and family-friendly area.

Last September, councilors in Galway overwhelmingly voted in favour of installing a temporary cycleway in the area. A public consultation process was then opened in the middle of last month for two weeks. It attracted just over 6,700 submissions, with 4,200 of them not in favour of the cycleway as proposed.

Since then, some councillors have tempered their support for the project and now a motion to “amend or revoke” the council’s approval last year is on the agenda for the council meeting, which was set to take place later today, Monday.

If the six-month trial cycleway goes ahead, it would open in March and would cost €1 million to install. Yesterday's cycle in support of the project saw hundreds of cyclists turning out, despite the rain. Those present started their cycle at the Maldron Hotel, Headford, and rode to Salthill via Claddagh Hall.
