Cyclists have been targetted in the latest terrorism atttack in the US; a pick-up truck driven down a cycle path killing at least eight people.

The police have arrested a suspect after the incident in the middle of the afternoon.

The authorities in the US said the incident was a terrorist attack. It occurred when the pick-up drove down a cycle path Lower Manhattan at around 3pm local time.

A Home Depot truck ran over several cyclists on the West St-Houston St cycle path for a long distance.

It eventually hit a school bus when the driver got out, armed with a paintball gun and pellet gun.

He was shot in the abdomen and the arrested at the scene.

New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill said, as well as the dead, others had "serious but non-life threatening injuries".

"The dead and injured were just going about their days, heading home from work or from school or enjoying the afternoon sun on their bicycles," the commissioner said.

"This is a tragedy of the greatest magnitude for many people, for many families here in New York and beyond today."

He added there was no indication of a wider or ongoing plot.
