Cyclists given priority on Liffey Cycle Route's potential ‘right hook’ junctions

Dublin City Council illustrates how some drivers will be turning right across the path of cyclists going straight on the Liffey Cycle Route. Drivers have been told by the council they must give way to cyclists going straight down the north quays

Dublin City Council has assured cyclists they will get a head-start on drivers at junctions with clear potential for ‘right hook’ collisions along the Liffey Cycle Route.

It has also said drivers who are turning right, and so
driving across the cycling route, must give way to cyclists going straight.

The new temporary Liffey Cycle Route has been installed
along sections of the north quays in Dublin city centre during the Covid19
lock-down.

And as people return to office work and as the city hopefully returns to more normal conditions in the months ahead, cyclist and vehicle traffic on the quays will increase.

The Liffey Cycle Route follows a path at the right side
of the road down the north quays. At some junctions, drivers can turn right off
the quays and over bridges to cross the Liffey to the south side of the river.

This will necessitate drivers turning right across the
path of the cycling route; a manoeuvre that could result in some
drivers hitting cyclists who are continuing straight.

The risk is not new in the area as drivers turning left
off the quays have always had to cut across sections of cycle lanes,

However, because the Liffey Cycle Route is new, vigilance
is required, especially by road users experiencing it for the first time.

Dublin City Council has advised that cyclists will “now
get an advanced green light at junctions”.
The council has also said that “car drivers turning right need to give
way to cyclists going straight”.
