Blood Stoney Bridge will take cyclists and pedestrians across the River Liffey. No vehicles will be catered for

A new
125-metre bridge proposed for the River Liffey will be designed for cyclists
and pedestrians only.

Called
Blood Stoney Bridge, it will feature a two-way cycleway in the middle with
footpaths either side.

Blood
Stoney Bridge will cross the river from Blood Stoney
Road, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, to New Wapping Street, North Wall Quay.

Dublin City Council said the plans for
the new docklands bridge will be lodged with An Bórd Pleanála early next year.

It is proposed construction will start
around the middle of 2021 with the bridge completed around the end of 2023.

The new bridge will fit in with the increasingly modern look of docklands area of Dublin City

“The nearest existing bridges to the proposed Blood Stoney Bridge are the Samuel Beckett Bridge to the west, and the East Link Bridge to the east,” the council said in a report on the mooted project.

“Both of these are primarily vehicular
crossings and are already operating at full capacity for pedestrian and
cyclists at peak times.

“By promoting sustainable modes of
transport, the bridge will reduce dependency on private cars and will result in
improved air quality as vehicle journeys are replaced by more sustainable
alternatives.

“On the bridge, pedestrian and cyclists
are physically segregated to reduce the risk of collisions.”

With a span of 125 metres, the bridge
will be comprised of a four-metre wide two-way cycle way in the middle that
will be segregated from the footpaths running either side.

Under the current plans it could be
open, like the nearby East Link, to leg boats pass under.
