A cyclist who died from injuries sustained in a crash with a driver in north Dublin on Sunday morning has been named as married father of three, and UCD Cycling Club road racer, John Walsh.
John, from Malahide in north Dublin, was injured in a crash with a driver at about 9.30am on Sunday on Malahide Road in Kinsealy. While he was taken to Beaumont Hospital for treatment, he was pronounced dead there later that day.
John is survived by his wife, Olivia, three sons - Andrew, Rowan, and Morgan - and his parents, Norman and Anne, brothers Niall and Louis and sister Helen.
His tragic death has been confirmed in a tribute by UCD Cycling Club, which last year tragically also lost another member in a road crash with a driver, Gabriele Glodenyte. She was killed in north Co Dublin while out training with her partner, Seán Landers.
"With the deepest of sorrow we pay tribute to our valued club member, John Walsh, who died yesterday from injuries he sustained in a crash with a driver in Kinsealy," UCD Cycling Club said in a statement on Monday evening.
"John has been in the club many years and was a crucial part of the club's activities, especially during his time as a student when he was club captain, and had taken out his licence to race again in the club colours this year.
"We will deeply miss John who was always to be seen ripping up the corners of Mondello on a Tuesday night. Our sincere condolences to John's wife, children, family and friends. May the wind be always at your back."
John's death notice said he had been "taken tragically and too soon, surrounded by family and friends", adding he would be "deeply missed by his family who adored him".
Gardaí have launched an investigation into John's death and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward, including any other road users with video footage.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the Malahide Road in the Kinsealy area between 9am and 9:30am are asked to make this footage available," the gardaí said in a statement on Sunday.
