Cyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in road crash in Co Mayo

Gardaí are investigating a road crash in Co Mayo that has left a cyclist with life-threatening injuries, with an appeal issued for witnesses to come forward

A cyclist has suffered life-threatening injuries in a road crash in Co Mayo. Gardaí are trying to determine the circumstances after the cyclist was discovered in the road early on Friday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear if another road user was also involved, though investigating gardaí have appealed to anyone filming in the area, including via dashcam, to come forward.

A release from the Garda said they were investigating a "serious injury road traffic incident which occurred on the N17 in Co Mayo" earlier today.

"The incident happened on the road between the airport and Charlestown," the statement added. "A cyclist, aged in his 60s, was found with life-threatening injuries at around 12:20pm, and was brought by ambulance to hospital.

"A technical examination is due to be carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and a stop/go system is in place on the road. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward."

Any road users who were on the N17 between the airport and Charlestown between 11:45am and 12:20pm and may have camera footage - including dashcam - are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
