Cyclist suffers horrible burns after phone explodes in back pocket

Gareth Clear, 36, from the UK was out riding when he fell off his bike with his phone in his ass pocket. The impact caused the phone to explode which resulted in him getting some very nasty third degree burns which required a skin graft.

A cyclist has been hospitalised in Australia after his iPhone “exploded” in his pocket when he fell on it while out riding.

Gareth Clear from the UK was in Sydney’s north shore when he fell off the bike and landed on his backside with his phone in his pocket.

The impact shattered the screen and within seconds he saw smoke coming from the pocket the phone was in.

He instantly felt searing pain towards the top of his right leg and he said he saw the phone “melting through my shorts”.

“My elbow and my knee and then my right butt cheek hit the floor simultaneously and my phone was in my back pocket screen in; so case out, metal side out,” he said.

“All of a sudden I felt a surge of pain in my top right leg, which was the iPhone. I heard a snap… I could see it melting through my shorts.”

He jabbed the phone away from his skin and onto the ground and it was then when he saw “battery goo” emerge from the casing.

He immediately went to hospital on the North Shore of Manly where he had to get skin grafts due to the extent of his injuries.

He also burned his fingers while touching the phone.

After Clear shared the photo of his injuries on Twitter, phone manufacturers Apple contacted him to say “this looks serious”.

The company asked him to contact them to see how they could help.
