Criminal inquiry begins after cyclist shot on club training ride

A criminal investigation has begun after a club cyclist sustained this wound having been shot while out training, the club believes from a Traveller camp he was passing.

A club cyclist sustained a nasty wound having been shot with an air rifle while out cycling a few days ago. Police in the UK have launched an investigation.

Warwick Lanterne Rouge Cycling Club has pointed the finger at residents of a Traveller camp the cyclist was riding past at the time.

The camp has since moved on and the police have yet to establish who was responsible.

The injured cyclist was among a group of about 15 mountain bikers when he was shot at and wounded in the leg.

“The group of mountain bikers were at the end of a regular ride,” spokesman for the club told local media.

“Several shots were heard and what were assumed to be pellets passed by several riders. One of the riders was hit on the leg by one of these.

“His skin was broken and blood drawn even though he was wearing thick and substantial shorts designed for mountain biking.

“We are pleased some of the younger regular riders were not in attendance and thankful the injury wasn’t more serious.

“The organised club rides will avoid this area of the town until the matter is resolved, and the club has informed its membership to take care if using this route outside of club rides.”
