Irish cycling club's tribute after one of its members is murdered

Pictured in happier times, on the bike and loving life during a training ride in Co Wicklow. However after being in the wrong place at the wrong time - while doing an early morning training session - Bray Wheeler Bobby Messett was shot dead. The club has paid tribute to him.

An Irish cycling club has paid tribute to one of its members after he was shot dead today.

Bobby Messett, who was a member of Bray Wheelers in Co Wicklow, was killed in a boxing club in the town this morning.

“Dear club members and friends of Bray Wheelers,” a notice on the club’s Facebook account said this evening.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of club member Bobby Messett today.

“Very respected, and a popular member, he will be very much missed by all club members.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to Bobby’s family and friends. RIP.”

The 50-year-old, who has been officially named by the gardai, was heavily involved in a lot of sports including boxing, soccer and adventure racing.

Bobby had competed in leisure events on the bike and had also ridden club races, winning some of them.

A married man with three adult children, the media has reported he was a completely innocent party.

He happened to be in Bray Boxing Club for an early morning work-out when a man with a gun walked in and began to shoot.

Bobby died from his wounds. Two other men, including boxing coach Pete Taylor, were wounded but survived.

Pete Taylor is the father of former Olympic champion Katie Taylor who is now a professional boxing champion.
