Sam Bennett sets out plans for first part of 2018 season

It's been a busy and successful 12 months for Sam Bennett in 2017. And now he has confirmed his plans for the first period of the 2018 season. His schedule includes several opportunities for the fastment. Like last year, he heads to Australia to get the ball rolling. Above, winning Race Melbourne last January.

Having enjoyed an excellent finish to the 2017 season, Sam Bennett has set out his plans for next month.

The Carrick-on-Suir cyclist confirmed to stickybottle that he will open the season in Australia.

He travelled Down Under last year and took victory at Race Melbourne.

Having risen up the world sprinting pecking order since then, he will be looking for more success this time around.

His first event will be the short sharp People’s Choice Classic in Adelaide on Sunday, January 14th.

Bennett will then line out with his Bora-hansgrohe team at the Santos Tour Down Under.  The 2.UWT race runs from January 16th to 21st.

Four days later the Irish sprinter will take to the start line at Race Melbourne.

And the final race of his stint in Australia will be the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race; on January 28th.

As well as winning Race Melbourne last year, Sam Bennett took 3rd on the opening stage of the Tour Down Under.

Since then he has won five WorldTour races. They include a stage at Paris-Nice and four stages of the Tour of Turkey.

He won a total of 11 races last season. Bennett would also take the points classifications at the Tour of Slovenia and Czech Cycling Tour.

Success during the 2017 campaign came for the 27-year-old despite illness at the Giro and a bout of exhaustion later in the summer.
