This interesting video has emerged of a cyclist in the west
of Ireland preventing what could have been a very serious incident on the road.
The driver behind the cyclist was about to overtake but the man on the bike spots an oncoming car and immediately takes up a more defensive position, moving slightly out into the road.
The cyclist also sticks out his hand – in a pronounced
and very clear motion – to encourage the driver behind him to stay back, which
the driver does.
And then, just seconds later, two oncoming drivers in
cars pass the cyclist and the car behind him. Luckily everything went off
without a hitch and there was no harm done.
While a cyclist would need confidence to take a more
defensive position in the road and to warn a following driver at the same time,
it’s interesting to see the role that a cyclist can play when a following
driver may be itching to overtake at the wrong time.
