Gardaí have launched an investigation after a cyclist in her 20s was killed in a crash with a motorist in north Co Dublin today. The area is very popular with cycling clubs, and individual riders, for training routes and it is understood the woman who lost her life was on a training ride at the time.
Cycling Ireland said it was "shocked and saddened to hear of the death of a female member" in a road crash.
"On behalf of all of our members, Cycling Ireland would like to extent our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, club-mates and all who knew her. Our thoughts are with them at this devastating time."
Garda Headquarters, Dublin, also issued a statement in which some details of the crash were confirmed, including the fact a man in his 20s was driving the car involved in the fatal collision, which occurred close to Garristown and Oldtown.
"Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a pedal cyclist that occurred at approximately 12:50pm this afternoon Saturday May 27th, at Grallagh, Garristown, Co Dublin," the Garda statement said.
"A female pedal cyclist, aged in her 20s, has been removed from the scene to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown where a post mortem will take place in due course.
"The road is currently closed pending an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.
