A cyclist who fell ill during the RideLondon-Surrey 100 sportive in the UK yesterday died in hospital.
The organisers of the event said they were confirmed “with deep sadness” the death of 48-year Robin Shard.
A statement from the organisers added he Mr Chard, from Bicester in Oxfordshire, had suffered cardiac arrest at Kingston Bridge around 25 miles into the event.
And while he was treated at the scene by medical staff and was assisted by other riders before being taken to Kingston Hospital, he later died in the hospital.
Mr Chard’s wife Vickie said: “Robin was doing something he loved to raise money for Cancer Research UK, a cause that was very important to him after losing his father, his mother’s partner and my mother to cancer.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped and supported Robin and me, especially the event stewards, the event team and the amazing staff at Kingston Hospital.”

One of the crashes that saw a cyclist airlifted from the scene caused long delays.
