Cyclist who went missing on Wicklow bike ride found dead

A search team involving the Garda and other agencies was put in place. Sadly the searchers found the body of a man, now confirmed as a missing cyclist.

The body of a man found in Co Wicklow in recent days has been confirmed as that of a cyclist who had gone missing in the area.

He had gone out on a bike ride and when he failed to return home the alarm was raised.

Mountain rescue search teams, along with gardai at the Civil Defence were called in to scour trails in Co Wicklow.

That search took place on Saturday between Aughavannagh and Rathdangan. A man’s body was found during the search in a wooded area at Barnamelia near Mullin Cross.

And now the remains have been confirmed as those of missing cyclist.

He was originally from Belfast but had been living in Baltinglass. He often rode his mountain bike in the Wicklow area.

While the cause of his death is not clear, it is believed he fell from his bike and sustained injuries.

He had gone out on Friday from his home in his car with his bike.

After parking in the Aughavannagh area it is believed he set out in the direction of Lugnaquilla.

However, he failed to return home and it quickly emerged he had also not gone back to his parked car.

The search was then put in place and sadly the remains were found on Saturday and are now confirmed as those of the cyclist.
