Hopes that a cyclist who went missing after going on a bike ride late last week will be found safe and well have been given a strong boost after he was spotted in Co Offaly.

And gardaí have now released a new CCTV image, taken in Birr, in the hopes people will recognise Thomas 'Tommy' Egan, or that he will see the reports of the search for him and make contact with his family.

Investigating gardaí have renewed their appeal for the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of Mr Egan (36), who was reported missing from Ballymurray, Knockcroghery, Co Roscommon, on Sunday.

"Thomas was seen on Friday, October 10th, at approximately 2:35pm cycling from Knockcroghery towards Athlone," the Garda said of the last sighting before he was reported missing as his family grew increasingly concerned about his absence and the lack of contact from him.

"There has since been a sighting of Thomas on Connaught Street in Birr, Co Offaly, on Monday afternoon, October 13th," the statement added of the fresh sighting yesterday, which was captured in the CCTV image now shared by gardaí.

"Thomas is described as being 6 foot 2 inches in height, with a medium/strong build, dark brown curly hair and a beard. He has green eyes.

"When last seen, Thomas was wearing a green jacket, black tracksuit bottoms and black runners. He has a black backpack and black bicycle helmet with a red band on the bottom."

Gardaí added they remained very concerned for the missing man's well-being, while his family was also very anxious for news of him.
