A mountain biker has been killed after being mauled by a grizzly bear while riding through a national park in the US.

Brad Treat, 38, a law-enforcement officer with the forestry service, was riding with a friend when he was knocked from his bike on a trail in the Halfmoon Lakes area of the Flathead national forest in Montana.

His friend and training partner left the scene to seek assistance.

But when he returned with armed officers they found Treat fatally injured and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Treat was a well-known endurance athlete in Montana and had been an accomplished runner while at college.

“It appears they likely surprised the bear and Treat was taken off his bike by the bear,” said county sheriff Chuck Curry.

“Brad was an integral member of our area law enforcement team and a friend to us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family tonight.”

Before Wednesday, there had been 10 bear-related human deaths in the national park since it was created in 1910.

The last was in 1998, when three bears killed and partially ate a park vendor employee while he was hiking.
