A cyclist was killed while out cycling this afternoon. Gardai have appealed for any eyewitnesses or people who were in the area at the time to come forward.
Gardai have launched a public appeal for witnesses to come forward after a cyclist was killed today in a road traffic crash.
The victim, a woman in her 40s, was killed out cycling at about lunchtime on Sunday.
It was the second time since the start of the year that a cyclist has died on the Republic’s roads.
“Gardaí in Skibbereen are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred this afternoon, Sunday April 7th, at approximately 1pm on the N71 in the townland of Aghills, Skibbereen, Co Cork,” a Garda statement said.
“A woman pedal cyclist (late 40s) was fatally injured when in collision with a car. The driver of the car, a woman in her late 50s was uninjured.
“The body of the deceased has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.
“Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are at scene and the road is currently closed to facilitate the examination of the scene and local traffic diversions are in place.
“Gardaí in Skibbereen are appealing to any persons who may have travelled the road this afternoon or who can assist Gardaí in the investigation to contact them at Clonakilty.”

The crash scene is near Shepperton Lake in west Cork.
The woman’s death out cycling this afternoon follows the death of a male cyclist last Thursday week in Co Kerry.
On that occasion the victim died in hospital eight days after being found with unexplained injuries at Colkeragh on the R552 between Ballylongford and Listowel.
