Cyclist safety in Republic

Last year 15 cyclists were killed in the Republic. That was an 50 per cent increased on 2016.

Minister for Transport Shane Ross TD (Ind) has recently promised to introduce minimum passing distance legislation.

Motorists would be legally obliged to give cyclists a gap of at least 1 metre when passing. On roads with a speed limit above 50km per hour the safe passing distance would be 1.5 metres.

The Government has pledged to introduce the new measures but has not yet done so, with legislation always taking some time to frame and then enact.
