Cyclist killed in crash near Tralee, Kerry
A cyclist has been killed in a collision with two cars in Co Kerry. The fatality occurred last night.
The man’s death, in Co Kerry, is the fourth time a cyclist has died on the roads in 10 days.
Pat Beakey (70) was killed in Co Meath last Sunday week. Ryan McCarthy (25) died in south Dublin last Friday.
And a man critically injured in Co Derry last Thursday morning died in hospital on Saturday.
Fourteen cyclists have now been killed on the roads of the Republic this year.
The Garda released a statement outlining some of the circumstances of last night’s latest fatality.
“Gardaí in Tralee are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred in the townland of Tonevane, Tralee at approximately 8.15pm last night,” it said.
“A two car and pedal cycle collision occurred and the male pedal cyclist (39 years) was seriously injured.
“(He was) removed to Kerry University Hospital where he later passed away.
“Both drivers - one male, early 40s, and one female, mid 50s - were removed to hospital with minor injuries.
“The road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place. It is expected to remain closed for the morning.
“Gardaí wish to appeal for witnesses who were in the townland of Tonevane between 8.10p.m and 8.30pm to contact them at Tralee Garda station.”
