
A cyclist was killed this morning, Friday, after a crash with the driver of a vehicle in north Cork.
The victim is the first cyclist to be killed on the roads of the Republic so far this year.
The man cyclist lost his life on the road between Fermoy
and Rathcormac, which has been closed.
Traffic diversions were in place after the road was
closed so it could be examined as part of the inquiry in the cyclist’s death.
A number of emergency vehicles remained at the scene on
Friday morning at the crash site.
The man was killed on the R639, which is the old Cork to
Dublin road, at a location between Rathcormac and Fermoy close to Fermoy Mart.
Early reports suggest the incident took place at about 7am when the man was cycling into Fermoy for work.
The 4X4 the driver was in was due to be examined by gardai as part of the investigation.
So far in 2020 some 33 people have lost their lives on the roads of the Republic compared to 29 deaths for the same period last year.
As
the investigation was continuing the Garda released a short statement about the
fatal crash on Friday.
“Gardaí
in Fermoy are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred this morning
on the R639 between Fermoy and Rathcormac at approximately 7am,” the statement
said.
“A
male pedal cyclist (60) was fatally injured when a collision occurred between a
car and his bicycle.
“He
was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner has been notified and his body
has been removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital.
“Garda
Forensic Collision Investigators are currently at the scene and the road is
currently closed.
“Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses or any
road users in the area who may have dashcam footage to contact Fermoy Garda
station on 025 82100, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda
Station.”
