Cyclist killed in early morning crash; Gardai seek witnesses

Gardai say the male cyclist was killed while involved in a crash on Saturday morning. They are appealing for witnesses.

 

A cyclist has lost his life in a collision in Co Louth early this morning, Saturday.

A statement from the Garda said the man was in his 50s and was involved in a collision in Blackrock just before 7am.

The circumstances of the crash are now under investigation but the Garda has made no mention of any third party involvement, or any vehicle being involved in the incident.

It is also unclear how long the cyclist was on the road before he was found by those who alerted the emergency services.

The investigating team is based in Blackrock Garda statement and detectives there are looking for witnesses who may be able to assist in establishing how the collision occurred and the man lost his life.

His death is the second fatality involving a cyclist on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year, with a teenager having lost his life in Cork last month.

The Garda statement about the latest fatality said: “Gardaí in Dundalk are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision involving a pedal cyclist in Blackrock, Co Louth.

“Shortly before 7am Gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene of an incident involving a male cyclist (aged in his 50s) at Birch’s Lane, Blackrock.

“The man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. His body was removed to Louth County Hospital for a post-mortem examination and the local coroner has been notified.

“Garda forensic collision investigators have been requested to attend and examine the scene. The road is currently closed to traffic and local traffic diversions are in place.

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have travelled on Birch’s Lane between 4am and 7am to contact them at Dundalk Garda Station 049-9388400 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.”
