Cyclist killed in Dublin was training with friends at time, car driver involved

A cyclist killed in north Co Dublin at the weekend has been named as David Steele, a leisure cyclist and triathlete who was training with friends at the time.

Club, was killed in a crash involving a driver in a car in north Co Dublin
while on a ride with a number of friends on Saturday morning.

A Garda investigation is underway into the crash, which involved a driver in a car. The crash occurred in the St Margaret’s area just before 12 midday.

Mr Steele, who lived in Swords, was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the car involved required medical treatment, according to the Garda.

The deceased man’s wife, Karen, has taken to social media to pay an emotional tribute to him and describe the shock moment she learned of his death.

“This is
the hardest post I’ve ever had to
write,” she said. “Yesterday at 2pm my world was torn apart when two Gardai called to my house.

“The love of my
life - my husband, my
soul mate - was out cycling with all his buddies and he was hit by a car and killed instantly.

“He loved
his cycling so much and died doing what he loved. My world will never be
the same. Absolutely heartbroken.
My Ironman forever. The
big strong man forever.”

Mr Steele was a leisure cyclist who rode sportives and also took part in triathlon in the colours of his Dublin club.

He had ridden Mallorca 312 and had competed in and finished Barcelona Ironman.

Portmarnock Triathlon Club said they were “devastated” at
the passing of Mr Steele, who was known to friends as Chas.

“David joined the club in 2017 and
was a great friend to everyone in the club. He had such a positive and
encouraging attitude and will be missed dearly,” the club said.

“We want to pass our condolences to club members Karen and all David’s family and friends. He’ll always be in our thoughts.”
