
A cyclist killed in a crash involving a lorry driver in Dublin was married to a Dublin councillor and worked as a Leinster House usher while also previously having served in the Defence Forces.
Derek Doyle was cycling him from work when he was in a crash in Castleknock village, which involved a driver in a lorry. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and his death remains under investigation by the Garda.
Mr Doyle was married to Cllr Tania Doyle, a Fingal county councillor who also ran, unsuccessfully, for a Dáil seat during the recent general elections.
“I have no words, just tears. We are broken forever as a family. Myself and Hazel are distraught,” Ms Doyle told the Irish Independent of her husband.
“Our hearts are shattered into a million pieces. He is and always will be our hero. He went to work in Leinster House and started his journey home to us, but didn’t arrive.”
Mr Doyle, who was in his 50s, died in a crash involving a lorry driver on College Road, Castleknock Village, Dublin, on Thursday afternoon.
He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, with occurred at about 4.30pm. His remains were removed to the mortuary in Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for a postmortem.
Castleknock Village was closed for a period as a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators was taking place, with local diversions put in place.
“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward,” Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park said in a statement.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.”
