The latest cycling death, in Dublin rush hour, now means 10 cyclists have died so far this year, the same as all of last year.

A cyclist has died from injuries he sustained in a rush hour collision yesterday morning in south Dublin.

The victim, a man in his 50s, had been critically injured just after 8am when he was in collision with a motorist driving a car.

And though he was taken to hospital from the scene he has since died from his injuries.

His death brings to 10 the number of cycling fatalities so far this year in the Republic.

That figure is equal to the cycling death toll on the roads of the Republic in all of last year.

The Garda issued a statement confirming some details of yesterday’s collision. They are also appealing for witnesses as an investigation into the man's death has begun.

“Gardaí at Rathfarnham, Dublin 14 are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on Butterfield Park, Rathfarnham at approximately 8.10am,” it said.

“The collision involved a male cyclist in his 50s and a car. The cyclist received serious injuries and was taken to Tallaght Hospital.

“He was pronounced dead last night as a result of injuries sustained in this collision.

“Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examined the scene. The local Coroner has been notified.

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Rathfarnham Garda Station 01 666 6500, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”
