Cyclist killed in crash with driver in Dublin city centre, gardaí investigating

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a cyclist was killed in a crash with a driver in Dublin city centre

A cyclist was killed in central Dublin on Saturday morning in a crash involving a driver in a car. While the deceased, who was in his 70s, was rushed to hospital from the scene in Dublin 2 he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardaí sealed off the area on Dame St, where the crash occurred, for an examination as part of the investigation now underway. Investigating gardaí have also appealed for witnesses to the crash, just before 5.30am, to come forward.

"Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on Dame Street, Dublin 2 this morning, Saturday 18th May 2024 at approximately 5.25am," Garda Headquarters, Dublin, said in a statement.

"The collision involved a car and a cyclist. The cyclist, a male aged in his 70s, was seriously injured during the collision. He was taken to St James' Hospital where he has since passed away. The driver of the car is currently receiving medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

"Dame Street was closed this morning to facilitate a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The road has since reopened. Gardaí in Pearse Street are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them."

Any road users or pedestrians who were in the vicinity of Dame Street this morning between 5.00am and 5.45am, and who may also have camera footage - including dash cam - are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.
