Cyclist killed in crash with driver in car in south Dublin, witnesses sought

A man out cycling has been killed in Ballyfermot, Dublin, after being hit by a driver in a car

A man has been killed while cycling after he was hit by a driver in a car in south Dublin this afternoon, Monday.

The victim, who was in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Ballyfermot, Dublin 10.

Garda Headquarters in Phoenix Park, Dublin, said a full investigation was underway, adding gardai in Ballyfermot Garda station were seeking witnesses, especially those who may have been recording video footage in the area at the time.

"Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on the Killeen Road in Ballyfermot, Dublin 10," gardai said in a statement.

"The collision occurred shortly before 1pm, when a car and bicycle collided. The cyclist, a man aged in his 80s, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

"His body was taken to Dublin City Morgue where a post-mortem will now take place in due course. The driver of the car was unharmed.

"Diversions were in place for some time to allow for a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators. The road has now fully re-opened.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision. Gardaí are also appealing to any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the Killeen Road at this time, to make this footage available to them."
