Cyclist killed in crash with driver as road deaths keep rising

Gardaí are investigating a road traffic crash that has claimed the life of another cyclist on the roads of the Republic this year

A cyclist has been killed in a road traffic crash with a motorist. The fatal crash occurred in Co Monaghan early on Saturday afternoon. The victim, a woman in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman's death brings to five the number of cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year. Road deaths have been increasing this year as 152 people had lost their lives as of yesterday, some 35 higher than last year.

Gardaí released a statement about the latest crash, saying members of the force and and emergency services workers were still at the scene of the fatal collision on Cootehill Road, close to Monaghan Town on Saturday evening.

"The collision involved a car and a bicycle and occurred this afternoon at approximately 1.20pm," the statement said of the crash involving the driver and the woman who was killed while cycling.

"A female cyclist, aged in her 70’s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her body has been removed to Monaghan Hospital where a post mortem will take place. The road is currently closed for an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - and who were travelling on Cootehill Road... between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, are asked to make this footage available to gardaí."
