Gardai have launched an investigation after a cyclist crashed and died despite those he was training with trying to save his life.
A cyclist has died after crashing while out training in a group yesterday afternoon in Co Cork.
A Garda statement said the deceased was aged 71 years and was cycling in a group yesterday at around 4.40pm when he came down near Castletownbere.
It appears no vehicle was involved in the collision on the Castletownbere to Ardgroom road.
The Garda statement said: “A male pedal cyclist, 71 years, was out cycling with a group of colleagues when he came off his bicycle and struck the ground.
“His colleagues administered CPR until a local doctor attended the scene.
“The doctor pronounced the man dead a short time later and his body has been taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.”
Nobody else was injured in the collision, which is now under investigation.
The road where the cyclist died was sealed off after the crash and an examination was carried out by members of the Garda forensic collision unit.
Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the collision to contact them at Castletownbere Garda Station on (027) 70002, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
Yesterday’s tragic fatality was the second time this year a cyclist has been killed in a road traffic collision in the Republic.
Their deaths followed a black period on the roads last year when 12 cyclists were killed, compared to five in all of 2013.
By this time last year five cyclists had lost their lives on the roads of the Republic.
