Gardaí have launched an investigation into the death of a cyclist who was killed in a road traffic crash involving a driver in Co Kerry

A cyclist has been killed in a road traffic crash involving a driver in a vehicle in Co Kerry, with gardaí launching an investigation and appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The fatal road traffic collision occurred on the R569 road, Church Grounds, Kilgarvan, during lunchtime on Tuesday. The victim is the seventh person killed while cycling on the roads since the start of the year.

"Gardaí and emergency services responded to the collision involving a vehicle and a cyclist shortly after 1:40 pm. The cyclist, a male in his 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene," the Garda said in a statement.

"The coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place. The road remains closed at this time pending technical examination.

"All drivers going to and from Kenmare need to travel via Killarney and Moll's Gap on the N71. This road is not suitable for heavy vehicle traffic. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward."

Any road users who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - and were travelling in the area between 1pm and 2pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
