Gardaí in Limerick are investigating a hit-and-run, by a driver in a car, that left a cyclist seriously injured. A public appeal for witnesses to that crime has been launched as the victim of a recent fatal crash has been named as 18-year-old Sammy Hanrahan from Waterford.
The incident in Limerick, which was not fatal but has left a cyclist with serious injuries, took place almost two weeks ago. Gardaí have now appealed for the public's help after time has elapsed without investigators being able to trace the driver involved.
Sgt Michelle O’Halloran of Henry Street Garda station, Limerick, said her colleagues investigating the crash believed a number of people were at the scene at the time and she urged them to come forward.
"Gardaí at Henry Street are investigating a hit-and-run incident involving a cyclist and a red car. This occurred at the pedestrian crossing at Kilmurry Roundabout, Castletroy, Limerick, at approximately 21.50 hours last Tuesday week, the 18th of November," she said.
"It’s a very busy area with a high volume of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, so we believe there are potential witnesses who may have seen the collision or have relevant information. We are particularly interested in speaking with any motorists who may have dash-cam footage from that time."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212400.
Separately, tributes have been paid to teenager Sammy Hanrahan who died in hospital last Friday week, November 21st, after the injuries he sustained in a crash on Cork Rd, Waterford, on Sunday, November 16th.
Mr Hanrahan from Clonard Park, Ballybeg, was riding an e-bike when he was in the crash, which involved a driver in a car..
St Saviour's GAA Club, who Mr Hanrahan played for, said: "It is with great sadness that our club learned of the passing of young Sammy Hanrahan, who tragically passed away.
"Sammy was part of our U13 Eastern and County Football Championship–winning team in 2019 under manager Anthony Jacob. He also went on to win the U13 Hurling Championship in 2020 under managers Deaker Wyse and Dayne Flynn."
The club extended its sympathies to the Hanrahan family, adding "the friendships formed" during his years with the club "will be fondly remembered by all who shared the pitch with him".
