A cyclist is in critical condition after a crash in south Dublin involving a driver in a lorry

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a cyclist in his 20s was left critically injured in a crash involving a driver in a lorry in south Dublin yesterday afternoon.

The cyclist was taken from the scene to hospital, where he remains today, Thursday. Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses and have carried out a forensic examination of the crash scene.

Gardaí issued a statement confirming the crash occurred on the South Bank Road at the junction with the Whitebank Road in Dublin 4, adding they are now appealing for witnesses. The crash occurred at about 4pm.

"The male cyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he is currently in a critical condition," the Garda statement said.

"The scene was preserved and an examination was conducted by forensic collision investigators. The road has since reopened. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward."

Anyone - cyclists or drivers - travelling on the South Bank Road or the Whitebank Road between 3:30pm and 4pm yesterday and who was recording footage at the time is now asked to make this footage available to the gardaí.
