Cyclist hospitalised after crash with taxi driver amid cycle safety protests

The scene of the crash in Dublin in which a woman on a bike was hospitalised

A cyclist was injured in Dublin in a crash with a taxi driver as protests over cycle safety continued in the city.

Since the death of Neeraj Jain while cycling on South Circular Road in Dublin yesterday week a number of die-ins have been held to protest over conditions for cyclists in the city.

The deceased man, who was from Indian and was living and working in Dublin, was killed in a crash with the driver of a cement mixer outside a construction site where the new National Children's Hospital is being built.

A vigil was held for him and since then die-ins by cyclist activists have been held outside Dublin City Council's headquarters, outside the the Garda's road policing unit base and also outside Dail Eireann.

A final protest was held in the city centre last night, see video below, just hours after the latest crash in which a woman cycling was injured.

That crash, with a taxi driver, occurred in yesterday morning rush hour traffic at North Wall Quay outside Spencer Hotel just before 8am.

The Garda confirmed some of the details of the incident in a brief statement.

“Gardaí in Store Street responded to a report of a
traffic collision between a cyclist and car on North Wall Quay at approximately
7.59am,” it said.

“Upon arrival, a female cyclist was treated for injuries
and then removed to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.”

Gardai also appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact investigating gardai at Store St station in the north inner city.
