The cars turns into the Garda staion and across the bike lane, into the path of a cyclist who looked to be going very fast up the inside of the traffic. Even though the car was almost stationary, the high impact is very clear to see in the video
Cyclist hits car turning into Dublin Garda station
This cyclist was very lucky to come out of this collision, outside a Dublin Garda station, in one piece.
The incident occurred last Friday afternoon at the entrance to Sundrive Rd station in south Dublin.
Clearly the driver of the vehicle reaches the station entrance and has their indicator on to turn left.
They swing the front of the car left, cutting across the cycle lane on their inside.
Unfortunately at that very moment a cyclist comes up the inside at speed.
As a result, he hits the side of the car and goes flying across the bonnet.
It looked like he was taken by surprise by the car turning into his path.
Moreover, because he was riding quite fast worked against him when he needed to stop suddenly.
Witnesses at the scene said a Garda was driving the car and got out and went to the aid of the cyclist.
After an ambulance was called the cyclist was brought inside the station to wait for its arrival.
Eventually he was taken to hospital for treatment. The gardai issued a statement saying:
“Gardaí in Sundrive Road are investigating a collision between a cyclist and a car that occurred on February 16 2018 at approximately 3:04pm.
“A male in his 30s was treated at the scene. We can confirm that the car was not an unmarked Garda vehicle.”
