Gardai seek witnesses after ‘cyclist hit pedestrian’ causing serious injury

This case is very unusual in that it is normally cyclists who emerge from crashes with third parties with the worst injuries. However, in this case the pedestrian is now undergoing treatment in hospital.

Gardai have launched an appeal for witnesses after a cyclist and pedestrian were involved in a collision in Dublin.

The incident occurred yesterday morning during rush hour. More than 24 hours the pedestrian remains critically ill in hospital.

The victim was transferred to Beaumont Hospital for specialist head injury treat such were her injuries.

The Garda has launched an investigation. It is treating the incident as a serious road traffic collision.

Cases like this, where a cyclist is involved in a collision with another party who suffers worse injury, are very rare.

The Garda has issued a statement appealing for witnesses and also outlining some of the facts of the case.

“Gardaí at Donnybrook, Dublin 4, are appealing for witnesses to a serious road traffic collision which occurred yesterday morning, Thursday, March 22, at approximately 9am at Grand Parade, Ranelagh, Dublin 6,” it said.

"A female pedestrian in her 40s was struck by a pedal cyclist as she attempted to cross the road," the statement added, though there was no mention of the cyclist's condition.

“The injured female was initially taken to St Vincent’s University Hospital in Elm Park. (She was) subsequently transferred to Beaumont Hospital where her condition is described as critical.”

The Garda added investigations were ongoing.
