Rescue team issues statement as cyclist found dead in Wicklow is named

The detail of the very extensive search and rescue operation for a missing cyclist who was found dead in Wicklow has emerged in the search team’s statement. The deceased cyclist has also been named.

 

The mountain rescue team asked by Gardai to scour Co Wicklow for a missing cyclist at the weekend has issued a statement about the man’s death.

And the deceased has now been named as Jonathan Booth (40s). He was originally from Belfast but had been living in Baltinglass.

He had gone out on Friday afternoon from his home in his car with his bike.

After parking in the Aughavannagh area he set out in the direction of Lugnaquilla.

However, he failed to return home and it quickly emerged he had also not gone back to his parked car.

When he did not return home he was reported missing to the Garda in the early hours of Saturday.

Mountain rescue search teams, along with gardai and the Civil Defence, formed a search party from early on Saturday.

An area between Aughavannagh and Rathdangan was searched and Mr Booth’s body was found at Barnamelia near Mullin Cross.

He had fallen from his bike and into a ravine, suffering fatal injuries.

The Dublin-Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team has issued a statement about the search.

“At 7:30a, on Saturday, May 5th, Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team were tasked by An Garda Síochána to assist them in the search for a mountain biker who was missing,” it said.

“The man was reported missing at 2am after he failed to return from a cycle on forest tracks near Rathdangan on Friday evening. Gardai located the man’s car on Saturday morning, parked at a forestry entrance.

“Dublin and Wicklow, Glen of Imaal, and South Eastern mountain rescue teams, Search and Rescue Dogs Association (SARDA), Garda Air Support Unit, and the Civil Defence were all tasked to assist in the search.

“Sadly, the man’s body was discovered in the late morning. The search was stood down at 12:52pm.

“Dublin and Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased.”
