Cyclist fighting for life after hitting pedestrian on Phoenix Park cycle lane

The incident occurred on Chesterfield Avenue, the main road that runs through Dublin's Phoenix Park and which many cyclists know very well.

 

A man is gravely ill in hospital after colliding with a pedestrian in Dublin’s Phoenix Park last evening, Monday, while cycling.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the incident which has left the cyclist, aged in his 50s, in critical condition in hospital.

A statement from the Garda’s media bureau said the injured cyclist was riding in a cycle lane on the upper part of Chesterfield Avenue – the main road through the park – when he hit a man in his 30s.

The pedestrian was also injured and was taken to hospital for treatment to his leg and back.

However, the cyclist sustained much more serious injuries and he has been life in a critical condition.

The Garda statement said: “Gardai in Cabra wish to appeal for witnesses to a serious injury collision that occurred in the Phoenix Park yesterday evening at approximately 8.40pm.

“A male cyclist in his 50’s who was cycling on the cycle lane on the upper part of Chesterfield Ave (the city bound side between the Aras and Castleknock Gate), was seriously injured when he was involved in a collision with a pedestrian.

“The male cyclist was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he is described as being in a critical condition.

“The male pedestrian in his 30’s was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital with leg and back injuries
