Cyclist fighting for life after crash on Sally Gap, Wicklow

A cyclist is in a coma in hospital after crashing in Co Wicklow on a Sunday morning ride at the weekend.

News of the crash is only emerging in reports this afternoon, Wednesday.

The 20-year-old woman has been in hospital since sustaining serious head injuries while descending a steep stretch at Sally Gap.

The incident occurred just before 10.30am close to the Lead Mines car park as she was descending in the direction of Laragh,

It is unclear if she was on her own at the time or in a group.

However, the alarm was raised and she was airlifted from the scene by the Dublin Coast Guard.

The woman was taken to Beaumont Hospital in north Dublin which specialises in severe head injuries.

The area where the woman crashed has always been very popular with leisure cyclists and with racing men and women looking for testing terrain to train on.
