Cyclist fighting for life after being hit by car in Dublin; gardai appeal for witnesses

A cyclist hit by a car in Dublin has been seriously injured and is fighting for life in hospital.

 

A woman is critically ill in hospital after being knocked from her bike while cycling in north Dublin last evening.

Gardai have launched an investigation and have appealed for witnesses to come forward to help their inquiries.

The collision that has left the woman fighting for her life occurred at 6.45pm at the junction of Malahide Rd and Greencastle Road in north Dublin.

The location is a busy intersection near the exit to the M50 and Clarehall Shopping Centre in the north Dublin suburb of Coolock.

The victim, who gardai said is aged 45 years, was cycling in the inbound lane of the Malahide Rd when she was struck by a motorist driving a silver Opel Astra car.

The emergency services were contacted and when an ambulance arrived the woman was treated at the scene for her injuries.

She was then taken by ambulance to nearby Beaumont Hospital where she remains in a critical condition today.

The man driving the car, who is in his 60s, was uninjured.

The road where the incident occurred was closed by gardai and examined by officers working for the crash scene investigation unit.

Gardai in Coolock station are investigating the collision and have appealed for anyone in the area at the time and who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.

The area would have been busy as rush hour traffic wound down and it is believed there were a number of people in the area who saw what occurred.
