A cyclist who was found injured on a road in Co Kerry has
since died from his injuries, the gardai have confirmed.
And now officers investigating the case have appealed for
information about how the man may have sustained his injuries.
One line of inquiry is that the man crashed off his bike and sustained injuries. He was discovered in the road and the emergency services were alerted.
The cyclist was still alive when he was airlifted to hospital from the scene after being discovered there on Wednesday.
However, he died in the early hours of Thursday morning. And now a Garda investigation is underway to try and determine what happened to him.
“Gardaí in Listowel investigating the death of a male
cyclist in his 60s are appealing for witnesses,” the Garda statement issued on
Saturday said.
“On Wednesday, March 27th, shortly after 5pm gardaí and emergency
services were called when a male cyclist was found lying on the road at
Colkeragh on the R552 between Ballylongford and Listowel.
“The injured man (was) removed by helicopter to
University Hospital Limerick where he was later pronounced dead in the
early hours of Thursday.
“Following a postmortem examination earlier today gardaí investigating the circumstances of the man’s death have appealed for witnesses.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Listowel Garda Station 068 50820 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.”
Gardai believe the dead man may have fallen from the bike
and suffered injuries that have now proved fatal.
It does not appear the incident was a hit and run though the circumstances of how the man was found injured on the road remain unexplained.
So far this year six more people have died on the roads of the Republic than during the same period of 2018.
The death of the cyclist in Co Kerry is the first fatality involving a cyclist since the start of the year.
