Cyclist dies in hospital from injuries sustained in weekend crash in Cork

Gardaí are investigating the death of a man after an apparent fall from his bike in Co Cork on Saturday morning

A man has died from injuries he sustained after an apparent from from his bike in Co Cork on Saturday morning. The deceased, who was in his 70s, was found unresponsive by a passer-by in Cobh on Saturday morning.

The victim had sustained injuries, after it appears he fell from his bike, and while he was taken to hospital for treatment he was pronounced dead there a short time later.

Gardaí confirmed the incident had taken place, and proved fatal, and said the results of a postmortem on his remains would dictate the direction of their investigation into the fatality.

It is understood the man who died was aged 77 years and as rom the Cobh area, close to where he was found injured by the roadside.

"Gardaí attended the scene of a fatal road traffic incident that occurred at approximately 8:30am on Saturday 6th July 2024 at Ballywilliam, Cobh, Co Cork," gardaí said in a press statement.

"A male pedal cyclist, aged in his 70s, found unresponsive on the side of the road and taken to Cork University Hospital in a serious condition. He has since been pronounced deceased.

"A post-mortem examination will be arranged and this will determine the course of the Garda investigation. The road was closed for a time but has since re-opened."
