Cyclist dies from crash injuries in Co Laois, gardaí appeal for witnesses

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they try to determine precisely how the man lost his life while cycling in Co Laois yesterday

A cyclist has died from injuries he sustained in a crash in Co Laois, with gardaí now appealing for witnesses as they try to determine precisely how the fatality occurred.

Garda Headquarters said while the victim, a man in his 50s, was taken from the scene in Mountmellick by ambulance to hospital, he died there in the hours after the crash yesterday, Sunday.

No mention has been made of any motorist, or any other road user, being involved in the incident on College Avenue, Mountmellick, at approximately 4.30pm.

"The collision occurred when a male pedal cyclist, aged in his 50s collided with a railing," the Garda said in a statement.

"He was removed from the scene to Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise where he was receiving treatment and passed away last night. A post mortem will take place in due course.

"The road is currently closed and a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators is taking place. Diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage -  including dash-cam - who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to gardaí."
