Cyclist dies after crash with car; concern over rising cycling fatalities

Concern is rising as cyclists continue to be killed on the Republic's roads.
Another cyclist has died on the roads of the Republic, with a man injured last week succumbing to his injuries in his.
The deceased was in collission with a car while cycling in Skibbereen, Co Cork, last Friday week, April 21st.
While he was taken to hospital after the collission just before midday and has been undergoing treatment since then, he died yesterday.
The victim, a man in his 60s, was being treated at Cork University Hospital.
The driver of the car was not injured. Local gardai have begun an investigation unto the fatal incident.
The man’s death comes as deaths on the roads are rising. And there is particular concern about the number of cyclists being killed.
Last year, for example, there were 10 cyclist deaths on the roads of the Republic.
And though just one third of 2017 has now passed, the cyclist death rate is now at six.
Organisations like the Dublin Cycling Campaign and Cyclist.ie have been very vocal about the need for safer cycling facilities.
They are targeting much higher levels of public transport expenditure being divert to cycling spending.
They also want greater enforcement of road traffic laws that would make cycling safer.
The PSNI has already begun a major undercover cycle safety campaign. Officers in Belfast will ride around the city in cycling kit to detect motorists close passing.
They have also said cyclists breaking the rules of the road will also be dealt with.
However, there no such campaigns have been suggested for the Republic. And though close-passing legislation has been promised by Fine Gael, it is not enacted.
Cyclist death toll 2017
On Monday, March 27th, a woman in her 30s was killed while cycling in south Dublin. She was hit by a truck at the junction of Templeville Road-Whitehall Road, Dublin 6W.
Just 24 hours earlier, a man in his 50s was killed when in collission with a campervan while cycling in Bunratty, Co Clare.
One Friday, March 24th, a cyclist in his 40s was killed when he was in collision with a car on Patrick’s Street, Dublin 8, just before 1am.
On Sunday March 12th, another cyclist in his 40s was killed. He was in collision with a car on Conyngham Road near Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
Last month Tonya McEvoy was killed in Co Kildare when in collision with a car while she was out training.
She was with a training group from Orwell Wheelers at the time.
