
The death of a cyclist in his 40s after being hit by a car brings the number of cyclist fatalities since the start of the year higher than in all of last year.
A cyclist has died after being hit by a car in Co Waterford. The fatality is the sixth involving cyclists on the roads of the Republic this year, one higher than the number killed in all of last year.
The latest fatal collision occurred at Ballyvoile, Stradbally, Co Waterford, at approximately 6.50pm on Friday, when a car hit a 32-year-old man cycling in the area at the time.
The emergency services were alerted and while paramedics treated the injured man at the scene and he was taken to University Hospital Waterford by ambulance he was later pronounced dead.
The road was closed for a Garda examination and gardai in Kilmacthomas station are appealing to anyone who may have seen the crash to contact them.
Before Friday’s incident, the most recent fatal crash involving a cyclist occurred on May 17th in Co Mayo.
A man in his 40s died after being hit by a car from behind when cycling on the Ballaghadreen Road, about 2km outside Ballyhaunis.
In Co Galway on April 23rd a cyclist in his 60s died when he was hit by a BMW on the Gort Road in Loughrea.
On February 3rd, a woman who was struck by a car the previous week in Tralee, Co Kerry, died in hospital from her injuries. The victim, in her 40s, was cycling from her own home in Tralee to visit a relative in the town.
On January 27th, a cyclist died when he was knocked from his bike in evening rush hour traffic in Dublin. That collision occurred at City West Road, Brownsbarn Roundabout, Saggart, just before 5.30pm.
While the deceased was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital, he died a short time later at the hospital.
Another cyclist in his 40s was struck by a car at the Kilmurray roundabout in Castletroy on the outskirts of Limerick City on Wednesday, January 8th, and later died from his injuries.
